- The 14" display is great for productivity and entertainment

CONS

If you don’t want a Chromebook anywhere near you, the HP Stream 14 might be the best one for you. Besides being a name and model that dominated the sub-$200 laptop market for years it has some decent specs going for it. It’s a laptop running Windows with a decent Intel Celeron N4000 processor and 4GB RAM which might not sound much, but hey, it’s DDR4 RAM so it makes up with speed!
It has a storage of 64GB eMMC which is standard for laptops at this price point. But it also comes with a free 1-year subscription to Office 365 and 1TB of OneDrive Cloud Storage if you need a bit more space.
With up to 14 hours of battery life, this HP Stream will be able to handle work calls, make documents, answer emails, and even watch some Netflix and YouTube at night all on a single charge. The 14″ HD display will also serve well for productivity and entertainment. You can also get a touch-screen version, but that would be out of our $200 price point.

PROS
- Fast DDR4 RAM allows for smooth browsing
- Includes a free one year Office 365 Subscription

- Extremely portable (looks great as well)
CONS
- 4GB RAM Capacity might fill up quickly if you're running Windows, even in S Mode.
- Processor: Intel Celeron N4020
- RAM: 4GB DDR4
- Storage: 64GB eMMC
- Display: 11.6 HD
- Battery Life: Up to 12hrs
Up next we have the Asus L210. It’s a thin and portable laptop with an Intel Celeron Processor, 4GB RAM, and 64GB eMMC storage. But the highlight of this laptop for me is its gorgeous design. Now, I’ve owned and used Asus Laptops before, and they have similar designs that I just love again and again, and this laptop might be the cheapest one from Asus that have that design.
In terms of ports, this laptop has 2 USB-A ports, 1 USB-C port, and an HDMI port. The keyboard is tactile and accurate to type on (despite being in an 11″ laptop of course), while the trackpad is fairly large for this small laptop, and it even functions as a number pad as well.
This is also running Windows in S mode, so you can definitely do more here than with a Chromebook. And like most Windows laptop offerings here, this also has a free one-year Office 365 subscription.
4. MacBook Air 11" 2015 (Renewed)
PROS
- MacBooks are durable even with renewed units
- This MacBook Air Model is still supported with macOS Monterey in 2022
- 11" screen and an extremely thin design plus a great battery life makes this a perfect portable laptop
- i5 processor and SSD gives a smooth and quick experience
CONS
- 4GB RAM might not be enough if you're browsing a lot of tabs at once
- This is a 7 year old laptop by now, renewed or not, longevity is a gamble
- Processor: Intel Core i5
- RAM: 4GB LPDDR3
- Storage: 128GB SSD
- Display: 11.6″ HD
- Battery Life: Up to 11hrs
Yes, you can get a MacBook for under $200. The only catch is that some of them can get pretty old. And for this year, the MacBook Air 11″ 2015 is pretty much the best deal out there for a budget.
It has an Intel Core i5, 4GB of RAM, and a fast 128GB SSD, so yeah, it’s pretty buff compared to most laptops on this list. And with a backlit keyboard, this is also a great laptop for writers.
The thing with MacBooks is that they’re extremely durable not only with hardware and its classic design but also with software. I mean, this MacBook Air is still supported by Apple, and it’ll run MacOS Monterey fairly well.
If you own an iPhone or if you’re locked into the Apple Ecosystem, you can get this right away and it’ll serve you well.
5. HP EliteBook Folio 9470M (Renewed)
PROS
- Has great performance considering its age and price
- No lag experience thanks to SSD and good amount of ram
- The anti-glare display is a huge help if you're working outdoors or perhaps near a window
CONS
- Short battery life
- Heavy, Bulky, and I bet a good amount of people wouldn't bring this laptop for its outdated design
- Processor: Intel Core i5
- RAM: 8GB DDR3
- Storage: 180GB SSD
- Display: 14″ HD
- Battery Life: Up to 5hrs
The HP EliteBook Folio 9470M is a laptop that’s made for business, and despite being renewed it can still kick some power out. It comes with an Intel Core i5 processor that surprisingly performs well despite being an older generation. And it has a quick 180GB SSD Storage, and it also has a 14″ Anti-Glare HD display.
It’s a Windows Laptop, so you can do a lot of stuff with this laptop, but a downside to that is its battery life, you can get up to 5hrs at best but you’ll likely get 2-3 hours on average.
But, with an SSD and an 8GB DDR3 RAM, I think this is probably the best for a lot of people. You just have to beat the stigma that renewed is bad. Trust me, it’s a great way to save some cash with little to no drawbacks.
If you’re looking for a powerful $200 laptop and you don’t mind trading portability away, then this might be the one for you.
6. Samsung Chromebook 3
PROS
- Spill resistant keyboard
- Simple and proven durable design
- Very portable and lightweight
CONS
- 16GB storage might be a bit too little
- Only has DDR3-SDRAM which is slow to say the least
- The Intel Celeron N3060 is a bit outdated in 2022
- Processor: Intel Celeron N3060
- RAM: 4GB DDR3-SDRAM
- Storage: 16GB eMMC
- Display: 11.6″
- Battery Life: Up to 11hrs
Times are changing and even kids will need their laptops early on in their life. And for that purpose, the Samsung Chromebook is a reliable laptop that’s perfect for students of any age and even for people working often in their kitchen since it’s spill-resistant and it has the durable design that Samsung stuck with their laptops for maybe around a decade by now.
It has an Intel Celeron N3060 processor, an 11.6-inch screen, and it can chug around 11 hours of battery life, and it’s very lightweight at only two and a half pounds.
For memory, it has 4GB of RAM which is plenty enough for a Chromebook, and it also has 16GB of Flash Storage which might seem a bit too little, but again it should be fine if you’re getting this Chromebook for your kids or for the kitchen. Besides, since this is a Chromebook, you have to be connected to the internet most of the time so you can probably also access GDrive most of the time.
7. Lenovo Chromebook S330
PROS
- The large 14" Full-HD display is perfect for productivity and entertainment
- 64GB of storage
- Sleek and minimal design
CONS
- MediaTek's MT8173C chip is made for tablets, so I bet it won't perform too well on a laptop like this, the chipset is also a bit outdated
- Processor: MediaTek MT8173C
- RAM: 4GB LPDDR3
- Storage: 64 eMMC
- Display: 14″ Full-HD
- Battery Life: Up to 10hrs
The Lenovo Chromebook S330 is one of the latest laptops that Lenovo has in their Chromebook lineup. It comes with a MediaTek MT8173C Processor, it has a 14″ Full-HD Display, and it also has an amazing battery life of up to ten hours!
Ports are very minimal, there is a USB-C port that you can use with a lot of dongles, but a real catch with this laptop is the built-in full-size HDMI port. I mean, even some high-end laptops ditched the HDMI nowadays so it’s always a treat to have especially if you need to connect to projectors and screens. Keyboard is also great, it’s a full-sized one since this laptop is 14″ but each individual keys are also a bit larger than usual keyboards.
8. HP Chromebook 11a
PROS
- 15 hours of battery life!
- Has the latest WiFi 5 Modem
- Availability in multiple colors
CONS
- The MediaTek MT8183 is a mobile processor, it's powerful enough, but come on, a lot of other phones are more powerful than this
- Processor: MediaTek MT8183
- RAM: 4GB SDRAM
- Storage: 32GB eMMC
- Display: 11.6″ HD
- Battery Life: Up to 15hrs
If you want ultimate portability on a laptop, you have to have two things; an 11″ display, and a battery that’ll last forever. And yup, the HP Chromebook 11 does that!
It has a MediaTek MT8183 processor, it’s a mobile processor that is truthfully not the best when it comes to bringing out power to your laptop. But since it’s a mobile processor that sips a really low amount of power, it’s the reason why this 11″ laptop can reach up to 15 hours on a single charge. And that’s why this laptop is the perfect one for those who are always on the go.
For a Chromebook, it’s always great to have the best connectivity, and this laptop also has the latest WiFi 5 Adapter and Bluetooth 4.2 for all your wireless needs. As for external ports, this only has a headphone jack, MicroSD card reader, 1 USB Type-A port, and a USB Type-C that’s perfect not only for charging but also for connecting dongles to get more ports.
And to top it all off, this laptop is available in Black, Blue, and White.
9. Chuwi HeroBook Air
PROS
- Has a high speed 4GB LPDDR4 RAM
- 128GB SSD
- Super Slim design
- Equipped with a newer gen Intel Celeron Processor
CONS
- Chuwi is a relatively new company in China, so build quality and reliability is always a gamble
- Only lasts 5 hours on battery
- Processor: Intel Celeron N4020
- RAM: 4GB LPDDR4
- Storage: 128GB SSD
- Display: 11.6″ HD
- Battery Life: Up to 5hrs
Let’s go out of our comfort zones for a bit and take a look at a laptop that’s not from Acer, Asus, Lenovo, or any of those famous brands. Let’s take a look at what Chuwi has to offer.
It’s a Chinese laptop, and from my experience, Chinese laptops can get pretty barebones with their software (oftentimes missing a driver or two). But apart from that, I think it’s all good. It runs full Windows 10 with an Intel Celeron Processor, 4GB of fast LPDDR4 RAM, a proper 128GB SSD, and a battery that’ll last you up to 5hrs.
I’ll be honest and say that laptops coming from Chinese companies are usually pretty bad. But the Chuwi HeroBook Air is good enough for the price. And I think it’s worth mentioning that Chuwi is also offering more laptops of higher quality (with a higher price of course). But for $200, and after looking at some of the Chromebooks with MediaTek processors, I think that the HeroBook Air earned its spot on this list for having some decent specs on paper.
10. Asus Chromebook C202SA-YS02 (Renewed)
PROS
- Durable, splash and dust resistant, and can even handle a drop or two
- Extremely cheap
- 180° hinge
CONS
- Has some outdated chips and components
- Expect some wear and tear on rubber parts when getting these renewed laptops
- Processor: Intel Celeron
- RAM: 4GB LPDDR3
- Storage: 16GB eMMC
- Display: 11.6″ HD
- Battery Life: Up to 10hrs
You’ve read the title, this is a list of laptops under $200, but here we have a laptop that’s even cheaper than that at under $100! This is an Asus Chromebook, it has standard Chromebook specs with an Intel Celeron, 4GB RAM, and 16GB storage. But the catch with this laptop is its design. It’s built to withstand some water, dust, and even drops.
This laptop is great for engineers, carpenters, mechanics, and basically anyone who’s working in a rugged and dangerous environment. I mean, it’s not just the design, it’s also the price. If you ever manage to break one of these, you can just go ahead and afford to get another one.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What OS should I use for a $200 laptop?
You can get a $200 laptop that runs Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, and even macOS. But I'd say that the best one for $200 is ChromeOS, Windows, and macOS in that order. Linux can be great for budget laptops, but you do need to have some expertise to use that OS. -
Should I Consider Refurbished Laptops?
Yes, of course! Refurbished laptops on Amazon are certified and every single one of those laptops has to go through a series of inspections to make sure that you'll get the best quality possible. Although don't get a refurbished laptop if you're looking for a long-term laptop.
