HP or Hewlett-Packard is one of the most prominent electronics brands out there. Thus, HP gaming laptops are a caliber of their own. HP loves to extend its premium item philosophy even to its computers. Their devices do look great, but they also cost a bit more compared to the competition.
Furthermore, nabbing yourself a good deal for an HP gaming laptop is easier said than done. While HP has a simple naming convention for its laptops (like Lenovo), they made way too many variants of their Omen gaming lineup; and these share the same names but not the same specs.

That’s no issue unless you buy them impulsively, which is what we’re trying to avoid right now. Because we’re here to discuss which among HP’s Omen and other laptop lineups offer the most bang for your buck in 2022.
HP Omen 17 (17t-ck100)
PROS
- Affordable
- Customizable, you can lower the price and the specs
- DDR5 RAM
- QHD Display
- Sleek and minimalistic design
- 17-inch screen
- Lots of SSD slots
CONS
- 720p webcam
- No numpad
- Max CPU/Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-12700H
- Max GPU/Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3080 Ti Laptop GPU (16 GB)
- RAM/Memory: 16 GB DDR5-4800 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
- Storage: 1 TB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD (4×4 SSD)
- Display: 17.3″ diagonal, QHD (2560 x 1440), 165 Hz
The best Omen is the one that comes with the top laptop GPU, namely Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti and at least an i7 processor. That’s only half of what makes it the best; the other half is the fact that it’s around $1,000 to $1,500 more affordable than the usual gaming laptop with an identical CPU and GPU configuration.
For this, we did have to cut costs elsewhere; that was made possible thanks to HP’s custom part picker which is somehow only available for this particular model of the Omen (likely due to chassis constraints). In any case, a price point of around $2,400 offering an RTX 3080 Ti is a steal.
Besides, other appealing features include a 17-inch screen and current-gen RAM; not to mention the beautiful and sleek Omen chassis.
HP Omen 16

- Storage: 1 TB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD
- Display: 16.1″ diagonal, QHD (2560 x 1440), 165 Hz
If, for some reason, you’d like something a bit smaller and more manageable than the bulk of a 17-inch laptop, then this particular HP Omen 16 offers a good alternative. You needn’t fret about the screen’s aspect ratio though; this one is still 16:9 or widescreen instead of 16:10 like the usual 16-inch laptop.
The screen resolution is also QHD or 1440p and it’s paired with an RTX 3070 Ti which is more than enough for gaming on Ultra settings. In fact, you might want to opt for this one instead of the top-of-the-line Omen 17 depending on the games you play.
Price-wise, it’s in the same ballpark as the other RTX 3070 Ti gaming laptops, making it competitive enough for consideration.

The HP Envy lineup isn’t exactly built with gamers in mind, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bundle work and play on the same device. Because in terms of specs, this is one of the most well-off HP Envy laptops in its lineup. The design screams productivity all around with its silver chassis and minimalist style.
One thing to note is that this HP gaming laptop or semi-gaming laptop is 16 inches but unlike the Omen 16, it only comes in a 16:10 aspect ratio which is quite square in appearance. But apart from that, this is a good productivity machine that can sate your gaming needs. It’s a tad expensive though– it’s HP, after all, but that design somewhat justifies that.
HP Omen 16 Mid-range (16t-k000)

- Sleek and minimalistic design
- Customizable, you can lower the price and the specs or increase both

CONS
- Default storage could be better
- 720p webcame
- No numpad
- CPU/Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-12500H

- Storage: 512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD (4×4 SSD)
- Display: 16.1″ diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), 144 Hz
One of the issues with HP Omen laptops is that the mid-range options (that come with Intel + Nvidia combo) are pushing well past high-end pricing. Thankfully we have alternatives such as this particular HP Omen 16 which is true mid-range as far as mid-range goes.
It comes with an i5 and an RTX 3060, both of which are mid-range staples. The price is also mid-range (below $1,500) while maintaining some good compromises. If that’s not enough for you, you can always change the configuration since this is one of the few Omen 16 chassis that allows for a custom part picker.
You can even turn it into a high-end device, though you might want to consider the price.
HP Envy Laptop 14"
PROS
- Sleek and minimalistic design
- Small and light
- Comes with an i7 CPU
- Screen resolution is well above 1080p
- Good battery life
CONS
- 720p webcam
- CPU is last-gen
- Weird resolution
- CPU/Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-11390H
- GPU/Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3050
- RAM/Memory: 16 GB DDR4-3200 MHz
- Storage: 512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD
- Display: 14″ diagonal, 2.2K (2240 x 1400)
A 14-inch gaming and productivity device is bound to turn heads despite the minimalism; that’s probably why the HP Envy 14″ is named such. It’s compact, it’s light, and it features the signature beauty of the Envy lineup. The big difference is you can lug it around like an actual notebook.
Compromises had to be made and so, this particular HP Envy 14 only has an RTX 3050 but that’s better than its other variants; most don’t even have a dedicated GPU. The resolution is also odd and the RAM isn’t as generous compared to other HP offerings. Still, if you want something small and still gets the job done, this laptop ought to impress.
