The Asus ROG Ally is poised to be released sometime on June 13 and it has already unveiled its specs and price. It’s $700 for the best version. It’s slightly more expensive than the Steam Deck, and if you add a bit more, you actually can buy some gaming laptop alternatives instead.
If you go the gaming laptop route, you get access to a bigger screen and upgradeability with RAM and storage for the future. You also get a device that isn’t just limited to gaming.
Now, independent benchmarks have already published their results; the Asus ROG Ally’s closest equivalent is the GTX 1650 from NVIDIA so we looked for gaming laptop alternatives that match that performance or surpass it so you have a backup plan in case you change your mind and suddenly need a full computer or if you ran out of stocks for the Asus ROG Ally.
Keep in mind that for laptops in the $700, there were some compromises, but nothing too big since it’s mostly just the RAM that’s limited to 8 GB, something you can fix with a cheap RAM upgrade.

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3
PROS
- Included RAM is DDR5
- Ray tracing capabilities
- Upgradeable RAM
- Cheap price
- Good value
CONS
- Low storage
- 8GB RAM
Specs:
- CPU / Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 6600H
- GPU / Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050
- RAM / Memory: 8GB DDR5
- Storage: 256GB NVMe
- Display: 15.6″ FHD – 120Hz
The Lenovo IdeaPad is our fiercest competitor here as it holds the same price as the best version of the Asus ROG Ally except you can expect better performance from this one on top of a bigger screen since it packs an RTX 3050, which is considerably more powerful than the GTX 1650 and the ROG Ally’s Radeon Navi3 (based on synthetic benchmark scores).
Storage is lacking and you will need to purchase another RAM stick for more modern games, but that’s cheap anyway and it’s worth noting that the included RAM is DDR5 with a speed of 4800 MHz. So as far as an ROG Ally alternative, this one cuts it quite close.
MSI GF65 Thin
PROS
- RTX 3060 at this price point
- Sleek chassis design
- Decent storage for the price
CONS
- 8GB RAM
Specs:
- CPU / Processor: Intel 10th Gen i5-10500H
- GPU / Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
- RAM / Memory: 8GB DDR4
- Storage: 512 GB NVMe
- Display: 15.6″ FHD 144Hz
If you want something that can push the visual sliders even higher and still game at a comfortable framerate, then the MSI GF65 Thin is your best bet. It comes with an RTX 3060 which is better and something that can leave the Asus ROG Ally’s Navi3 in the dust.
Compromises, again, would be the 8GB of RAM (easy fix) and the 10th-gen Intel CPU. However, the GPU will mostly be doing the heavy lifting here. Still, it’s $100 more expensive than an ROG Ally so that’s something to consider. If the ROG Ally somehow reaches that kind of price due to scalpers, then this is a good alternative. Besides, it’s an RTX 3060 for around $800, that’s a steal.
HP Victus 15
PROS
- Beautiful HP Victus Chassis
- Decent storage
- 12th-gen Intel CPU
- Sturdy screen
CONS
- 8GB RAM
Specs:
- CPU / Processor: Intel Core i5-12500H
- GPU / Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050
- RAM / Memory: 8GB DDR4
- Storage: 512 GB NVMe
- Display: 15.6″ FHD 144Hz
If you value CPU capability, then the HP Victus 15 (RTX 3050 version) might offer you better longevity and efficiency in the long run. It comes with a previous-gen i5-12500H which is around the same power as the i7 of the 11th-gen Intel CPUs though at a lower TDP.
The HP Victus Chassis has proven to be quite a looker with its clean lines and minimalistic keyboard and branding. Thermals are also notably enhanced and you won’t see this running too hot anyway since it only sports an RTX 3050.
MSI - Prestige 14
PROS
- 16 GB of RAM at this price point
- Compact
- Decent storage
CONS
- Lightweight CPU
- 60Hz refresh rate
Specs:
- CPU / Processor: Intel Core i5-1240P
- GPU / Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
- RAM / Memory: 16 GB DDR4
- Storage: 512 GB NVMe
- Display: 14″ FHD
For the same price as an Asus ROG Ally, you can get near identical or slightly better performance (as it’s close to the GTX 1650). On top of that, you don’t have to upgrade the RAM since this one comes with 16 GB already and the storage is spacious enough.
The screen is one of the biggest drawbacks here since it only comes with 60Hz, though that’s good for the battery and you’ll likely be forced to stay at that refresh rate on the ROG Ally anyway lest you drain it in 1-2 hours. So the competition is pretty close here in the GTX 1650 laptop’s case, and it’s up to your needs or wants to determine which is better.
