5 Best Lenovo Gaming Laptops in 2022

Gaming Laptop September 6, 2022 by Sid Natividad

When it comes to having clear-cut categories, Lenovo gaming laptops are typically more consumer-friendly. They don’t mix up the components for their model series and lineups compared to other laptop brands.

As a result, Lenovo gaming laptops are easier to purchase, especially if you’re just looking for something that fits your needs. “Legion” is best reserved for gaming, “ThinkPad” or “ThinkBook” is for work; everything else has its purpose or niche, including the ultrathin ones so you can look like you’re having a productive day in a hipster cafe or something.

As a brand, Lenovo has a good reputation. Its Legion lineup is rather commendable for using fully-powered mobile GPUs that use their full potential wattage (unless otherwise stated by specific models). This ensures their performance is always a cut above the other brands that might have reduced the wattage for their components in order to cut costs.

Since we’re here to find out which among Lenovo gaming laptops are the best, we’re mostly going to be sticking to the Legion lineup.

But even then, the mountain of information on the spec sheets doesn’t make things easy to pick. Even the Legion lineup at Lenovo can be confusing especially since they mix in previous generations of hardware with the latest ones.

So if you’re in the market for a Lenovo laptop that won’t disappoint when it comes to gaming, you might want to check out the brand’s best offerings for 2022.

When it comes to offering the best of the best for gamers, Lenovo’s Legion 7i typically knocks it out of the park in several aspects. It has top-of-the-line consumer-grade gaming hardware for laptops and doesn’t include as many compromises in wattage or TDP/TGP.

So you can rest assured that your gaming laptop is performing a bit better compared to other brands. Price-wise, Lenovo got extremely competitive for a big brand. This laptop has the same main components as the more expensive Razer Blade at a significantly lower price.

Sure, the display isn’t 4K and is only 2560 x 1600 but at 16 inches of actual screen real estate, too much pixel density is wasted.

While we did mention that the ThinkPad and ThinkBook lineups are usually reserved for work and productivity, it’s hard to ignore the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5. It’s the top-of-the-line product for the X1 Extreme sub-series.

It’s a lot more expensive compared to the Legion 7i and is actually on par with the Razer Blade but this one comes with a 4K screen, so the price is justified here. To that end, it’s great for graphic designers or video/photo editors who like to play games during their breaks to wind down.

The laptop also looks more professional compared to the Legion lineup, and no one will suspect you of bringing a high-end gaming device to a meeting or class.

Not everyone wants to lug around a large gaming laptop that weighs almost three kilograms. That can limit mobility. And having a high-end GPU means you need better cooling pads, adding up to the total weight of your baggage. That’s why the Legion Slim 7 offers a more minimalistic approach.

True to its name, this laptop is light and thin. It only weighs around 1.9 kilograms, putting it in the notebook or low-end laptop weight class. But this thing still packs a punch.

The CPU is quite grand and will impress in productivity tasks. Meanwhile, the RTX 3060 is enough for most games. They did have to cut down the cooling system in order to make it thin and light; that meant the most powerful GPU they could put inside it was the 3060.

The Legion 5 or 5i is the tier below the Legion 7. As such, it offers more modest specifications and more affordable pricing. It’s a good option for budget-conscious gamers who still want a high-end gaming laptop. The highest that a Legion 5 or 5i can go is with an RTX 3070 Ti.

Lenovo also offers lower-specced variants for this sub-series, going down as low as an RTX 3050 Ti which is bordering on the low-end for gaming. In any case, you can’t go wrong with this lineup. As for why you would want to opt for a Legion 5i Pro instead of just the non-pro Legion 5i, the Pro versions offer a bigger screen/resolution, better processor, and better RAM.

All of those components help boost framerate in games, so the Pro variants are well worth it for future-proofing.

  • Size: 15.6 inches

Of course, there are times when you might want to choose not to go over the budget for extra premium features you can live without. In that case, the Legion 5i Gen 7 with RTX 3060 means the hole in your pocket won’t be as big.

Because at the time of writing, this one particular model paired with an i5-12500H is only going for $1,329.99. That’s quite a steal considering it also comes paired with DDR5 RAM.

The big difference compared to the Legion 5 or 5i Pro is that this one comes with a 15.6-inch screen instead of Lenovo Legion’s usual 16-inch. Thus, the resolution is lower at 1080p but at least the aspect ratio is widescreen at 16:9. Plus, at this screen size, more pixels than FHD is the least of your concern.
