The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 might be the best GPU right now, but it costs just as much as a whole high-end gaming PC. Luckily, it has a smaller sibling, the RTX 4080 and it only costs as much as a whole mid-range gaming PC; such is our reality right now. The new Nvidia GPUs are expensive regardless, so you will want to grab the best RTX 4080 models.
In defining the “best” for these RTX 4080 models, the most important factors would be:
- Raw, practical performance
- Cooling performance and noise levels
- Size and style
- OEM manufacturer reputation
Granted, their performance will be more or less the same or similar since they’re all RTX 4080. But each OEM manufacturer puts a different spin on their versions of the silicon chips they acquired from Nvidia.
Consider these for a wiser purchasing choice.

Asus TUF Gaming GeForce 4080 OC Edition
PROS
- Straightforward and unintrusive aesthetics
- Excellent boost clock
- Good cooling performance
- Stock configuration trades blows with stock Asus Strix
CONS
- Inflated price tag
- Big and bulky
Specs:
- Brochure Boost Clock: 2625 MHz
- Dimensions: 348.2 x 150 x 72.6 mm
- Weight: N/A
- Brochure Power Consumption: N/A but it requires a 750 W PSU
Asus and its Strix options might be the best of the best but those cards are way too expensive especially when you can just get something from the TUF lineup. In some benchmarks, the TUF RTX 4080 even edges out the Strix model by a couple of frames (which could be due to a margin of error, or not).
In any case, you want this card for its reasonable pricing.
On average, it costs around a hundred USD less compared to the more premium Strix version. Besides, you can overclock it anyway to Strix levels. When it comes to design, it’s just right; not too aggressive yet not too plain and it also comes with a subtle ARGB for MLG noob killers out there.

MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Suprim X
PROS
- Great overclock potential
- Good cooling performance
- Excellent default boost clock
- Stylish
CONS
- Inflated price tag
- Big and bulky
Specs:
- Brochure Boost Clock: 2640 MHz
- Dimensions: 336 x 142 x 78 mm
- Weight: 2364g
- Brochure Power Consumption: 320 W
It might be hard to fit the RTX 4080 Suprim X into certain builds and setups due to the glossy gunmetal gray, but if you want the best overclocker out of all RTX 4080 models, then it’s hard to beat this one. MSI apparently cherry-picked its best binned RTX 4080 chips and paired them with the best cooler and firmware they have.
That made the Suprim X models a cut above the rest and with the corresponding price tag to match that pedigree. The brochure might state that it boosts to just 2640 MHz on the stock overclock settings, but a lot of users report it going to 2800+ MHz by default and even reaching past 3000 MHz if they manually overclocked it.
Of course, your mileage might vary depending on your luck with the binning and silicone lottery, but you have higher chances of getting a supreme RTX 4080 chip with the MSI Suprim X.

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 Aero OC
PROS
- White paint and shroud, gives a unique and rare feel
- Minimialistic and sleek shroud design
- Impressive cooling performance
- One of the most quiet RTX 4080 models
- Good boost clock and performance
- Doesn't appear bulky despite being big due to color
CONS
- Expensive
- Core clocks could be better for the price
Specs:
- Brochure Core Clock: 2535 MHz
- Dimensions: L=342 W=150 H=75 mm
- Weight: N/A
- Brochure Power Consumption: N/A but it requires an 850 W PSU
Truth be told, you can’t go wrong with just about any RTX 4080. They’re all flagship high-end cards so the performance is within just a few frames of one another.
At most, cooling performance and noise along with style will be the deciding factor here. In those three categories, the Gigabyte RTX 4080 Aero OC is looking to be the most appealing. Gigabyte is known for its strong yet silent fans for its high-end GPU models, after all.
Of course, the most important specification here is that it comes in a sleek white color which fits well in just about any build. The core clock looks a bit lower despite the “OC” tag and the card is more expensive (same price as the Asus Strix) but that’s to be expected for white computer components.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Founder's Edition
PROS
- Compact and smaller compared to OEM models
- Minimalist and sleek design
- Good overclockers
CONS
- Noisier compared to other models
- Inflated price tags at the moment
- Runs hotter compared to other models
Specs:
- Brochure Boost Clock: 2.51 GHz / 2505 MHz
- Dimensions: 11.97 x 4.84 x 2.38 inches
- Weight: N/A
- Brochure Power Consumption: 320 W
It might have the weakest performance out of all the RTX 4080s out there (theoretically, that is) but the Founder’s Edition of the RTX 4080 is still one of the most popular choices available. A lot of users seem to be after that reference Nvidia cooler design, which is famed for its industrial-grade build.
Moreover, the reference RTX 4080 has a clear advantage over the OEM partner RTX 4080 models and that would be its smaller size. It can fit better in older PC builds and cases since it doesn’t exactly exceed the dimension thresholds set up by previous generations.
But all in all, most people simply go for the Founder’s Edition since they’re also considered novelty GPUs.

Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Trinity OC
PROS
- Reasonable price (close to MSRP)
- Sleek shroud design
- Backplate looks nice and non-industrial
CONS
- Conservative factory overclock
- Asymmetrical fan sizes might irk some people
- Only slightly better than the reference model
Specs:
- Brochure Boost Clock: 2520 MHz
- Dimensions: 356.1mm x 150.1mm x 71.4mm
- Weight: N/A
- Brochure Power Consumption: 320W
Unfortunately, the Founder’s Edition for the RTX 4080 isn’t the most affordable model (thanks to scalpers and possibly scarcity). The cheapest ones are made by Zotac, namely the Trinity edition, there’s also a Trinity OC edition that comes with a factory overclock out of the box.
In terms of performance, you can expect these to be slightly faster and more powerful compared to the reference model or Founder’s Edition. However, don’t expect too much of a performance advantage since the overclock is a mere 15 MHz compared to the reference core clocks.
As for cooling, it at least comes with a triple-fan design and a bulky shroud so it should perform better and possibly quieter compared to the Founder’s Edition.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How much is the performance difference between the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090?
The more expensive RTX 4090 is a lot more powerful. On average, it can produce 25 percent more frames (FPS) in games compared to the RTX 4080. -
How much is the performance difference between the RTX 4080 and RX 7900 XTX??
It depends entirely on the game being tested, but they seem to be neck and neck. In some games, AMD RX 7900 XTX pulls ahead assuming the game is optimized for AMD hardware. The same goes for the RTX 4080.
