The fun part in the custom PC hobby is when you have enough money for a high-end build. At this point, budget is less of a concern and you’re more inclined to get the best of anything. That includes the best high-end GPUs.
Now, 2023’s offerings are somewhat controversial, but despite the increased cost thanks to NVIDIA, you can’t deny how much raw performance these new high-end GPUs offer.
It’s not just performance either. The new generation cards also come with juicy new tech that can further increase your games’ framerate with minimal visual compromises.
And while you could technically just get any high-end GPU as there are only a handful lineups (RTX 4080/4090 and RX 7900 XT/X), they have big differences depending on their OEM manufacturer.
So this recommendation of the best high-end GPUs in 2023 is less about the reference model, but more about the best third-party or OEM models (MSI, Sapphire, Asus, etc.). This way, you can narrow down your search.

MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM Liquid X
PROS
- Liquid-cooled
- Quiet and cool
- Large overclock headroom due to liquid cooling
- Minimalist shroud design
- Lots of VRAM
- Best raw performance
CONS
- Expensive
- Huge power consumption
- Challenging to build into most cases
- No fan RGB
Specs:
- 2.64 GHz clock speed
- Video Memory: 24GB GDDR6X
- Memory Interface: 384-bit
- 11.1 x 1.7 x 5.5 inches
- Liquid cooled
As far as GPU models go for this generation and in 2023, the RTX 4090 sits snuggly at the throne. It’s the most powerful gaming component right now and most of the time, is unmatched in its framerate output (barring a few poorly optimized AAA games).
Of course, all this raw power comes at a huge cost. It’s the most expensive consumer GPU right now and apart from that, you’ll also have to worry about its voracious appetite for electricity. But, if you have the budget and the will to accommodate this card, then by all means.
While you’re at it, you might as well purchase the best one, namely the MSI SUPRIM Liquid X which comes with a built-in radiator, meaning it’s a lot more silent and a lot cooler than other models.
Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 4080 16GB Xtreme WATERFORCE
PROS
- Liquid cooled
- Quiet and cool
- Large overclock headroom due to liquid cooling
- Comes with RGB
- Small GPU block
CONS
- Expensive
- A bit challenging to build into some cases
Specs:
- 2.24 GHz clock speed
- Video Memory: 16GB GDDR6X
- Memory Interface: 256-bit
- 9.29 x 5.75 x 1.57 inches
- Liquid cooled
You also can’t go wrong with Gigabyte’s offerings and when it comes to the most powerful yet silent and cool RTX 4080, their WATERFORCE model is right at the top. Unlike with MSI’s SUPRIM Liquid X lineup, Gigabyte was thoughtful enough to include fans that have RGB.
The GPU block here is also smaller and more minimalistic thanks to the three-fan radiator. That should lend to a cleaner look for your overall setup and case. Again, since it’s liquid-cooled, you can be more confident in pushing the card past its limits with the overclock values.
XFX Speedster MERC310 AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
PROS
- Beautiful cooler design
- Reasonable pricing
- Can do ray tracing
- Good cooling
- Lots of VRAM
CONS
- Huge card
- Random coil whine issues
Specs:
- 2.45 GHz clock speed
- Video Memory: 24GB GDDR6
- Memory Interface: 384-bit
- 13.54 x 5.04 x 2.24 inches
The beauty in AMD Radeon’s RX 7900 XTX cards, is that they can sometimes trade blows with NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 depending on the game. Certain Call of Duty titles and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are odd cases where the significantly less expensive RX 7900 XTX can beat the RTX 4090.
Those might get fixed soon, however. Still, you can’t deny the power of the RX 7900 XTX. It’s AMD’s flagship GPU, after all. And out of all the OEM models for the RX 7900 XTX, the XFX Speedster MERC comes out on top (usually in popularity) due to how cost-efficient it is.
It’s not the fastest, of course, but it comes close. More importantly, it’s a lot less expensive compared to the fastest option (Liquid Devil from PowerColor).
XFX Speedster MERC310 AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
PROS
- Beautiful cooler design
- Reasonable pricing
- Can do ray tracing
- Good cooling
- Lots of VRAM
- Good boost clock
CONS
- Random coil whine issues
- Huge card
Specs:
- 2.53 GHz clock speed
- Video Memory: 20GB GDDR6
- Memory Interface: 320-bit
- 13.54 x 5.04 x 2.17 inches
Again from XFX’s Speedster MERC lineup, here’s an RX 7900 XT that’s a guaranteed looker once more. It also uses the MERC cooler, which is a callback to the traditional GPU shrouds and coolers of previous generations. Likewise, this one’s a huge beast and is only slightly thinner compared to its RX 7900 XTX brother.
Again, it’s not the fastest card there is, but AMD is famed for its budget-friendly and considerate GPUs and CPUs– something this OEM variant encapsulates. Meanwhile, the performance is impressive enough for anyone to consider it close to the fastest card in this weight class (namely the one from Sapphire NITRO).
MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X Trio
PROS
- Good cooling
- Can handle 4K well
- Reasonable price
- Quiet
- Power-effiecient
CONS
- Huge card
Specs:
- 1920 MHz clock speed
- Video Memory: 12GB GDDR6X
- Memory Interface: 192-bit
- 14.56 x 2.44 x 5.51 inches
Now for those of you who want their gaming PCs to still classify as high-end while adhering to a certain budget, then the MASI Gaming X Trio version of the RTX 4070 ought to satisfy at the very least. It has one of the best implementations of cooling solutions as far as RTX 4070 cards go. Not to be confused with the MSI Ventus 3X which had a batch issue with its cooling pads.
The RTX 4070 has proven to be a capable GPU that you can use to run 4K resolution though it’s going to be a lot comfier in the 1440p segment. And of course, you can max out just about any game in smooth framerates while keeping your power consumption and budget acceptable.
Why Is There No RTX 4070 Ti?
Because it had a bad value.
Currently, the RTX 4070 Ti retails at the same price as a Speedster MERC310 RX 7900 XT except the latter has better gaming performance if under rasterization. The only advantage the RTX 4070 Ti has is if you insist on using ray tracing, and even then, you’ll be sacrificing a lot of framerate for a visual effect that isn’t really a dramatic improvement.
And unlike its price point competitor, the RX 7900 XT, it’s a lot less robust when it comes to 4K since the RTX 4070 Ti only comes with 12GB of VRAM.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Are the best high-end GPUs worth it?
That depends on your budget and how much you value your gaming PC. But the GPUs we recommended all have good resale value and their relevance can last for five years at least. -
What is considered a high-end GPU?
For the price point, anything above $600 now falls in the high-end category though that's affected by a lot of economic factors. AS a rule of thumb, it's considered a high-end GPU if it has the number "7" or higher after the initial digit, i.e. X070 or X900 where X is the series number.
