If you are looking for a new laptop and have already shortlisted some, if the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 isn’t there, the list is not yet complete. Want to know why? Well, there are plenty of reasons why this laptop should be one of your top considerations. Although the initial pricing offered by Lenovo for this laptop was quite high, it was a bad decision by the brand as it didn’t compete well in that price range.
Now, since the price has come down to a whopping $600-$700 range, it’s an absolute beast in the market and is punching other brands right in the face. If you are interested to know more about the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 2-in-1 laptop, we will be reviewing it here for you, so stick around and see if this laptop is fit for you or not.
Key Specifications:
Performance
The Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14” 2-in-1 laptop comes equipped with one of the best offerings from AMD, the Ryzer 7 4700U processor. Honestly, if you look out in the market, you will either find Intel i5 processors or lower generation AMD processors in other laptops. That’s where this laptop stands proudly in the crowd with its Ryzen 7 chip. This is just one of the many reasons why the Flex 5 is an excellent value-for-money deal at the moment.
This chipset comprises 8 Cores and 8 Threads that operate at 2.0GHz. As you start pushing it to the limits, this processor can get as fast as 4.1GHz which is great! Although AMD is not very good with integrated graphics, this one has AMD Radeon integrated graphics. Fortunately, the graphics performance of this laptop is beyond our expectations, and we didn’t face any problems using any graphics-intensive software on this laptop.
Storage and RAM
In such a thin chassis, fitting in a hard drive seems slightly tough, especially when the main purpose of this laptop is to provide a fast experience to the users. That said, we loved Lenovo’s choice of putting in a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD which maintains a perfect balance of speed and storage space for this laptop.
The fact that you see the desktop screen within a few seconds after lifting the lid is so satisfying that anyone would fall in love with this laptop, at least we did! Not just that, we can’t forget to mention its 16GB DDR4 memory, which runs at a whopping 3200MHz speed, better than the entire competition. No matter how heavily you multitask, making this laptop struggle is quite difficult, unintentionally.
Design
The very first thing that everyone notices in a laptop is the design, and Lenovo has surely kept that in mind while designing this laptop. Since the laptop measures only 0.82×12.7×8.6 inches, it feels pretty small, like a 14” laptop should. Honestly, we did like its soft-touch material and overall design.
Being a convertible laptop, people expect the hinge to be super-sturdy, and this Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 doesn’t disappoint in this aspect either. However, it does feel slightly heavy compared to other ones of similar size. We didn’t expect it to be 3.3 pounds heavy, but it’s built like a tank and we surely like it.
Display
Like us, the designers of this laptop hate bezels too, and that truly reflects in the way they put the display in this laptop. With an impressive screen-to-body ratio, this laptop features a stunning 14 inches display. The best part about the display is that it’s an IPS panel with a Full HD resolution. If we compare the picture quality with a generic 15.6-inch Full HD laptop, this one looks much better since it has the same number of pixels, but in smaller screen space.
The laptop is not at all meant for gaming, so the 60Hz refresh should not bother anyone. However, there’s one flaw with this display that might be a deal-breaker for some people. With just 250 nits brightness, this laptop is not at all a viable option to use outdoors, as the screen seems too dull. That’s the only thing we didn’t like about this laptop so far. Otherwise, the colors are super-accurate, thanks to the IPS technology. In fact, for the users who are going to utilize it as a tablet, the Flex 5 has one of the best responsive touch screens out there.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Lenovo absolutely makes the best laptop keyboards, remember Thinkpad notebooks? Well, that laptop has its own different league, but the keyboard on the Flex 5 does feel a lot like it. The keys are surely backlit and have a decent travel distance. For our likings, the actuation force is quite apt as well. Moreover, switching over to this keyboard didn’t feel much weird either, like we usually feel with other laptops. On the other hand, the touchpad placement on this laptop is just perfect, almost centered!
Connectivity
Considering it a mainstream laptop, buyers have many expectations from a product like this. When it comes to connectivity ports, there are enough of them on each side, despite its thin chassis. On the left side, it has a charging port, HDMI 1.4b port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port which supports Power Delivery as well, and a headphone/mic combo jack. On the other side, there’s a full-size SD card reader, and 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. If you are concerned about the wireless connectivity features, it does have Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2.
Battery Life
Coming to the aspect where it totally outshines its competitors, the battery life. Under the thin chassis, there’s a 52.5Wh battery which can also be charged using a 65W USB-C Power Adapter. With such a huge-sized battery, there’s enough juice for this laptop to work flawlessly for up to 12 hours without an issue. Actually, in real-life experience, you can easily attain much more battery life, the 12-hour mark is just the comfort zone for this laptop.
